VA Execs Responsible for Wait-List Scandal Surround President on Facility Tour, Reform-Minded Groups Shut Out of Roundtable
Arlington, Va. – Concerned Veterans for America Legislative Director Dan Caldwell issued the following statement in reaction to President Obama’s visit to the Phoenix VA hospital:
“Most of the same VA executives responsible for the Phoenix VA wait-list scandal are still employed there and at least one, Sharon Helman’s chief of staff, Dr. Darren Deering, may even have been among the group of VA’s staffers showing the president around the Phoenix VA.
“President Obama is also giving the pretense of soliciting unvarnished input, but the editorial board of the Arizona Republic has summed up the obvious flaws in his approach.
“It will be impossible for the president to get a truly unvarnished view of the problems that persist at the Phoenix VA if he relies on a tour led by the very people responsible for the problems there.
“Likewise, if President Obama is serious about true reform, he should listen to – and work with – groups like CVA and The American Legion who have shown the courage to push for bold changes that put the needs of the veteran ahead of the VA’s bloated and broken bureaucracy.”
