VA Mission act the focus of the hearing. Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert Wilkie met last week with the Senate VA Committee to discuss the state of the department under his leadership.
Committee members asked Wilkie, who took office two months ago, about several looming issues, including the modernization of veterans’ health records. The secretary discussed ongoing conversations with the Department of Defense aimed at better integrating electronic health records for a smoother transition from active duty to veteran-status.
Wilkie also addressed the VA’s implementation of the recently signed VA MISSION Act. This law will overhaul the VA’s health care system and allow veterans more choice over where they seek their medical care. Throughout the new law’s implementation, Congress will monitor its rollout and keep the VA on course to meet key deadlines.
All in all, Wilkie says, the VA is in “better” shape than it has been over the last year. “I didn’t say good or excellent,” he stressed. “It is better.”
