ARLINGTON, Va.—Concerned Veterans for America (CVA) Executive Director Nate Anderson issued the following statement upon reports of the potential withdrawal of roughly 4,000 troops from Afghanistan:
“President Trump has been right in the past to call for a U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, and bringing 4,000 troops home to their families is an important step toward that end. Following the revelations of the Afghanistan Papers, withdrawing troops from that country is not only a strategically sound decision – it is the ethically right thing to do. We long ago accomplished what we needed to in Afghanistan, and after nearly two decades, it is time to bring our troops home.”
Anderson continued:
“While we applaud this small step toward fulfilling the President’s desire to end our ‘endless wars’, we hope that it becomes one of many steps toward a full and speedy withdrawal necessary to bring closure to the longest war in U.S. history. Along with the American public, we hope to soon see the return of all of our troops, and a chance to rethink our approach to foreign policy.”
BACKGROUND:
Polling commissioned by CVA earlier this year showed that 60 percent of veterans and military families would support the President if he withdrew American forces from Afghanistan.
CVA and VoteVets, traditionally bitter rivals, joined forces in 2019 to end our endless wars.
Additionally, CVA has called for the repeal of the 2001 AUMF, a measure it says would be “a critical step toward ensuring that Congress reasserts itself in shaping American foreign policy.”
