The United States is Finally Bringing Some Troops Home From Iraq

After more than twenty years of deployments, the U.S. military has begun reducing its mission in Iraq by about 20%, shifting forces and leaving fewer than 2,000 on the ground.

It’s a step in the right direction, but the fight to bring the troops home isn’t over.

Why Do We Still Have Troops in Iraq?

Washington sent Americans into Iraq on promises that never matched reality.

We were told it was about disabling weapons of mass destruction, ensuring stability, and spreading democracy.

It became a lesson in how good intentions and democracy building can spiral into endless conflict.

Our men and women in uniform defeated ISIS, trained Iraqi units, and gave Iraq every chance to stand on its own.

The U.S. mission has long been complete. It’s time to come home.

The Cost of Endless War is Staggering

Decades of war in Iraq has resulted in:

  • Nearly 4,500 American servicemembers killed
  • Over 30,000 wounded
  • More than $2 trillion spent
  • Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians killed
  • Countless veterans left with physical and mental health issues

Behind the numbers lie American sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, on the other side of the world, in a conflict that doesn’t even benefit the United States.

This has placed a strain on military families, veterans, and our nation as a whole.

Americans Agree: It’s Time

In a recent poll, Concerned Veterans for America found that nearly 7 in 10 Americans support a full withdrawal from Iraq.

CVA’s Executive Director John Vick put it plainly:

“Americans across the political spectrum recognize that after decades of fighting in the Middle East, our military presence no longer serves a clear strategic purpose.”

Our brave young men and women shouldn’t be deployed abroad without a clear objective and timeframe.

How Does This Affect American Strength and Security?

We face real challenges from border security, readiness, munitions shortages, and fiscal stability. Endless deployments distract from priorities at home and drain our resources.

Bringing Americans home from Iraq brings us closer to a foreign policy that:

  • Uses force only when vital to American security and defense
  • Demands clear, achievable objectives for our men and women in uniform
  • Ends missions when goals aren’t met and avoids “mission creep”

Valuing our military means prioritizing missions and understanding that we can’t defend everything or police the world forever

America must remain strong.

The Path Forward

For over twenty years, servicemembers in Iraq have carried the burden of failed policies. They’ve done everything their country has asked of them; now it’s our turn to do right by them.

This drawdown is a step in the right direction, but the mission won’t be truly over until every American service member comes home from Iraq.

Because peace through strength means recognizing when the fight is done.
