NEW POLL: Majority of veterans want less U.S. military engagement abroad, support bringing troops home from Iraq and Syria
ARLINGTON, Va. ― A new survey conducted by Concerned Veterans for America (CVA) in partnership with YouGov reveals strong support among veterans, military families, and the general public for a more restrained U.S. foreign policy and the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq and Syria.
The poll found broad agreement across political and demographic lines on the belief that America should be less militarily involved in the Middle East and should prioritize getting troops out of the region.
CVA Executive Director John Vick said the results underscore a growing shift in how Americans view U.S. military involvement abroad:
“These findings confirm what we’ve seen for years: veterans and the broader public want a foreign policy focused on restraint, accountability, and the national interest. Americans across the political spectrum recognize that after decades of fighting in the Middle East, our military presence in places like Iraq and Syria no longer serves a clear strategic purpose.”
“A majority of respondents, including Democrats and Republicans, agree with President Trump’s statement that the Iraq War was a mistake, and a strong majority support bringing our troops home from Iraq and Syria. Our warfighters should only be sent into harm’s way for missions that are vital to our nation’s security―and those missions simply do not exist in these conflicts at present day.”
CVA applauds the administration’s recent steps toward reducing America’s footprint in Iraq and continues to call for a complete U.S. troop withdrawal from both Iraq and Syria. Vick added:
“Our service members and their families have borne the cost of decades of intervention abroad. It’s time for a foreign policy that puts America first and focuses on peace, prosperity, and strength here at home.”
