Commission Established in 2014 VA Reform Bill Includes Top Health Care Experts
Arlington, Va. – Concerned Veterans for America (CVA) today announced the appointment of Senior Veterans Affairs Advisor Darin Selnick to the Congressional Commission on Care, as established in the 2014 Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act, to evaluate veterans’ access to health care throughout the VA system.
The appointment to the commission, which includes nationally respected health care experts such as Toby Cosgrove of the Cleveland Clinic, was made by Speaker of the House John Boehner.
In addition to serving as a Senior Veterans Affairs Advisor, Selnick also served as Executive Director of CVA’s Fixing Veterans Health Care Taskforce, which was formed to isolate existing challenges to veterans’ health care, identify systemic solutions, and propose concrete reforms to dramatically improve health care delivery for our nation’s veterans. As Executive Director, Selnick oversaw the crafting of the Veterans Independence Act—the final set of policy recommendations proposed by the taskforce to put veterans, not the VA, at the center of their health care.
Pete Hegseth, CEO of CVA, issued the following response to the appointment:
“Concerned Veterans for America is honored to have Senior Veterans Affairs Advisor Darin Selnick appointed to the Congressional Commission on Care to provide the highest level of analysis of the VA health care system.
“CVA has long known that Darin’s knowledge and expertise in his field are unrivaled, and are proud to see that Speaker of the House John Boehner also recognizes the insight that he possesses.
“As an eight-year appointee within the Department of Veterans Affairs and an Air Force veteran himself, Darin’s leadership as Executive Director of CVA’s Fixing Veterans Health Care Taskforce produced the Veterans Independence Act, leading to the development of legislation currently in consideration by top congressional leaders. We have no doubt that his participation in the commission will add immeasurable value to the evaluation of care to be presented to Congress.”
From 2001-2009, Selnick was an appointee at the Department of Veterans Affairs, where from 2001-2004 he served as Special Assistant to the Secretary and Associate Dean of VA Learning University, and from 2004-2009 as the Director of the Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. He is a retired Air Force veteran who attained the rank of captain, as well as a member of the American Legion, AMVETS, Air Fore Associate and National Association of Uniformed Services.
