CVA Opposes the Nomination of Jack Lew to Serve as Treasury Secretary

By Concerned Veterans for America

Today, President Obama officially nominated White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew to serve as the next secretary of the U.S. Department of Treasury. Pete Hegseth, CEO of Concerned Veterans for America, responded to the nomination with the following statement:

“With the United States facing what looks increasingly like a permanent fiscal crisis, it is past time for President Obama to show leadership in addressing the federal government’s runaway spending. Unfortunately, his nomination of Jack Lew to serve as Treasury Secretary indicates that the president is not serious about, or interested in, meeting that challenge. “As director of the Office of Management and Budget in the early part of President Obama’s first term, Mr. Lew was one of the architects of a spending plan that has straddled our nation with a historically high debt burden and deficit spending as far as the eye can see. We were assured by the Obama administration that this extravagant spending was a temporary measure that was needed to spur an economic recovery. However, nearly four years after the end of the recession in 2009, the U.S. continues to struggle with high unemployment and anemic growth, with only more debt to show for more spending. “Clearly, their strategy has failed. That failure is a threat not only to our economic strength—it also undermines our national security. And rather than recognize that failure and take steps to address this unprecedented fiscal crisis, the president has nominated one of the leading proponents of that failed strategy to lead his economic team in his second term. “America can’t afford more of the same fiscal policies that we saw in the first four years of President Obama’s administration—they are literally bankrupting our nation and undermining our security. The nomination of Jack Lew is even worse than the selection of Chuck Hagel, but indicative of the same problem—no real desire on the part of the White House to engage in a meaningful and serious discussion of spending and debt reform, which is why Concerned Veterans for America strongly opposes Mr. Lew’s nomination to serve as Treasury Secretary.”
