CVA on NDAA: Congress Finally Repeals Outdated War Powers
ARLINGTON, Va. ―Concerned Veterans for America (CVA) Executive Director John Vick issued the following statement Thursday evening after Congress passed Amendment 3337 to the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), repealing the 1991 and 2002 Authorizations for Use of Military Force (AUMFs) authorizing force against Iraq:
“This vote is a landmark victory for accountability, constitutional balance, and the men and women who serve our nation. After years of effort, Congress has finally acted to repeal outdated war powers that no longer reflect America’s security needs. This is a meaningful step toward ensuring that decisions to send our service members into harm’s way are made deliberately, lawfully, and only when strategically necessary.
“As veterans and military families, we understand the cost of war and the importance of ensuring our troops are only deployed when absolutely required to protect our nation. For too long, obsolete AUMFs have enabled open-ended conflicts without proper oversight. Repealing them honors the sacrifices of our warfighters and restores Congress’s vital role in matters of war and peace.
“CVA has long called for this reform, and we applaud lawmakers from both parties who came together to make it a reality. This is a win for veterans, for accountability, and for the American people.”
