CVA celebrates McCain’s life of service

By Concerned Veterans for America

ARLINGTON, Va.—Concerned Veterans for America (CVA) released the following statement on the passing of Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.). McCain passed after a hard-fought battle with brain cancer.

“Our nation has lost a true American hero. Whether you agreed with his positions or not, Senator McCain was an embodiment of courage, sacrifice, and service. After retiring from the Navy, he became a tireless advocate for his fellow veterans while serving on Capitol Hill, frequently leading the charge to reform and fix the VA. His legacy of service to country and his dedication to his fellow Americans will endure and should be an example for us all. We mourn his passing, but celebrate an extraordinary life very well lived.”

Senator McCain was one of the first elected officials to embrace giving veterans health care choice through the VA – making it a key part of his veterans policy platform during the 2008 presidential campaign. In the wake of the Phoenix VA wait list scandal, Senator McCain was instrumental in passing the 2014 Veterans, Access, Choice, and Accountability Act of 2014 which created the Veterans Choice Program. Senator McCain was also a strong supporter of the VA Accountability and Whistleblower Protection and his office played an important role in developing the recently-passed VA MISSION Act – which was named in part after Senator McCain.
