CVA Applauds Congressional Passage of Continuing Resolution to Reopen the Government, Calls for Reform to Prevent Future Shutdowns

ARLINGTON, Va. ― Congressional passage of the Continuing Resolution to end the government shutdown is a relief for active-duty service members, their families, and all Americans who have been negatively impacted over the last six weeks. This agreement ensures pay for our troops, nearly half of whom live paycheck to paycheck, and enables our military to focus on defending the nation rather than worrying about their next source of income.

While Concerned Veterans for America (CVA) welcomes the end of the shutdown, the grassroots advocacy organization stresses that this moment should serve as a wake-up call to lawmakers. The brinksmanship during this unnecessary shutdown harmed our armed forces, federal workers, and everyday citizens, using them for political leverage. Congress must act to prevent a repeat of this failure.

CVA Executive Director John Vick issued the following statement:

“Ending this shutdown is a relief for the men and women on active duty and their families who depend on a reliable paycheck while defending our nation’s prosperity and security. I thank both the Senate and House for coming to an agreement. But it should never have come to this. Every time Washington allows a shutdown to happen, American citizens pay the ultimate price. That’s unacceptable.

Congress must take real, lasting action to ensure this never happens again. Lawmakers should pass permanent solutions like the Preventing Government Shutdowns Act so critical services, including pay for active-duty troops and veterans’ care, are never held hostage to political gridlock. Americans expect the government to work for them: it’s time to deliver on solutions that make sure it does.”
