Concerned Veterans for America Demands Accountability at Wisconsin VA Clinic
‘Culture of Fear’ Allows Tomah VA to ‘Dope-up’ Veterans At Alarming Rate

Arlington, Va. – A new report from the Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR) tells of a Department of Veterans Affairs medical center in Tomah, Wisconsin, that has reportedly been deemed “Candy Land” for the exceedingly high amounts of narcotic painkillers that it prescribes to its patients.

Data obtained by the CIR shows that opiate prescriptions have quintupled since 2004, the same year Dr. David Houlihan was brought on as the hospital’s chief of staff. Whistleblower allegations helped expose the problems of over-prescription that have led to ‘doped up’ or ‘zombified’ patients, and even deaths from overdose.

Pete Hegseth, CEO of Concerned Veterans for America, issued the following statement in reaction to the report:

“Whistleblower accounts of gross malpractice at the Tomah Veterans Affairs clinic prove that the VA has a long way to go to hold irresponsible officials accountable for their mistreatment of the veterans they are supposed to be serving. It is appalling that those with the courage to speak up about the over prescription of narcotics at the Tomah VA were met with threats and reprisals from corrupt supervisors who rule by fear.

“We call on VA Secretary Bob McDonald to finally make use of the power congress and the president granted to him by last year’s VA Access, Accountability, and Choice Act to fire those responsible for atrocities like these – which are tragically not isolated. Veterans deserve quality health care—not to be over-medicated into a silent stupor by reckless providers who can’t be bothered to treat those who have served their country.”
