Concerned Veterans for America Statement on Secretary McDonald’s Refusal to Apologize for Wait Time Comments

By Concerned Veterans for America

Arlington, Va.Concerned Veterans for America (CVA) Vice President for Political and Legislative Action Dan Caldwell released the following statement regarding VA Secretary Bob McDonald’s refusal to apologize for his comments Monday comparing veterans’ wait times to waiting for rides at Disney:

“Secretary McDonald’s refusal to apologize for his insensitive and uninformed comments is shameful, but not surprising in light of his track record managing the Department of Veterans Affairs.  Thousands of veterans have been forced to endure excessive wait times. Hundreds of veterans have died waiting for care. At least one veteran has even been driven to end his own life because the VA kept him waiting for vital care. These veterans and their families would surely disagree with McDonald’s callous appraisal. Unfortunately, many of them will never get the chance.

“Secretary McDonald may wear an ‘I Care’ lapel pin at all his public appearances, but his continued refusal to acknowledge the problems at the VA and embrace reform indicates he cares more about pleasing special interests and protecting an ineffective bureaucracy that is failing our veterans.”
