New Op-Ed: New Congress Must Continue to Improve the Lives of Nation’s Vets, Regardless of Who Is in Control

In just a few weeks, the House of Representatives will transition from Republican to Democratic control. Bipartisanship is rare in Washington, but luckily there is something we can all agree on as power shifts across the aisle – the country needs to take care of veterans.

Concerned Veterans for America Deputy Executive Director Nathan Anderson recently called on the incoming Congress to prioritize veterans over party politics:

Veterans didn’t have an R or D after their names when they put on the uniform and swore an oath to defend our country. They came from diverse backgrounds. They had different beliefs. But they served for the entire United States of America and they all deserve to be properly cared for.

This has been the motivating principle behind VA reform efforts over the past several years, and it should continue to drive the agenda when the 116th Congress convenes in January.

In the past, members of both parties have put political differences aside to do what was best for veterans, such as when they rallied together to pass the VA Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act in 2017 and the VA MISSION Act in 2018.

That bipartisanship can continue once Democrats reclaim control of the House:

A transition of power from one party to the other on Capitol Hill shouldn’t stand in the way of the forward momentum we’ve built. Concerned Veterans for America will continue working with anyone who wants to improve the lives of our nation’s veterans. And it’s heartening to see that lawmakers appear willing to do the same.
