By Concerned Veterans for America

Executive Director Dan Caldwell asked candidates about veterans health care choice.

PEWAUKEE – Concerned Veterans for America Executive Director Dan Caldwell asked questions tonight of Wisconsin Senate primary candidates Leah Vukmir and Kevin Nicholson at a debate hosted by Americans for Prosperity-Wisconsin. He asked the candidates their positions on the future of reforming how the Department of Veterans Affairs delivers health care, and he joined panelists AFP Director of Policy Akash Chougule and University of Wisconsin-Madison Associate Professor of Political Science Richard Avramenko.

Caldwell is available to discuss CVA’s ongoing efforts to stabilize and expand the VA choice program. For more information or high-resolution photos, reach Chris Neefus at CNeefus@cv4a.org or (703) 517-4504.

Caldwell issued this statement at the end of the debate:

“We continue working to ensure the critical needs of our veterans and military are part of the national dialogue, and tonight’s first debate was an excellent opportunity. CVA has been leveraging our grassroots infrastructure to inform the public about how urgent it is that we reform the way the VA delivers health care and that it be modernized to serve a new generation of veterans. Because Wisconsin is home to 400,000 veterans, these issues should remain in the spotlight throughout the summer and fall.”

BACKGROUND

For years, CVA has advocated for substantial health care reforms at the VA. In CVA’s Fixing Veterans Health Care Taskforce, the group advocates that veterans should have the option to take their earned health care benefits and use them to access care at the VA or in the private sector.

The grassroots group recently expressed disappointment that compromise language to stabilize the VA choice program and reviewing the department’s assets and infrastructure (CVA on Omission of VA Reforms from Omnibus Spending Package, cv4a.org, 22 March 2018).

CVA has been urging Congress to take action on legislation to stabilize the VA health care system so that Congress can move on to broader structural improvements to the Veterans Health Administration and will continue to do so.
