In 2018, President Trump signed the VA MISSION Act into law, and it is arguably the most important veterans' health care legislation in a generation. The MISSION Act expanded health care choice options for veterans, making it easier for millions of veterans to get timely and quality medical care, whether at the VA or from a regular health care provider in their local communities.
There are roughly 18 million veterans in the United States, half are enrolled with the VA. Of these enrollees, about 65%, or 5.6 million, went to the VA for care in the past year. However, the VA consistently fails to fully implement the law. Veterans nationwide face massive bureaucratic barriers in accessing community care and the VA actively obscures information about their benefits. They still endure multi-month wait times, are denied urgent mental health care, or are asked to drive hundreds of miles out of state to other VA facilities - and they are rarely told about their community care eligibility.
It's past time that President Biden's VA remembers their mission is to serve veterans by getting them access to the treatment they need, not looking out for its own bureaucratic interests. The VA should expand veterans' health care options, especially for mental health treatment, not shrink them. Lawmakers like Senators Jon Tester and Sheldon Whitehouse and Rep. Mark Takano repeatedly get in the way of these essential changes.
