Honoring a legacy of sacrifice

The “Gold Star” originated 100 years ago with American involvement in World War I. The star was used as a way to indicate a family had lost a member during their service. Over the years, families who’ve lost loved ones during service, specifically those on active-duty, have come to be called Gold Star Families.

The incredible sacrifice of leaving a family behind in service of one’s nation can never be repaid. The courage it takes to continue on that legacy of sacrifice is incomprehensible. But our nation’s Gold Star families exhibit this courage each and every day. They’re mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, wives, husbands and children who must go on living the lives that their loved ones died to protect.

Today, we recognize and honor those Gold Star families who experience this sacrifice everyday so that we can live in a free nation. Thank you.
