Reforming Veterans Affairs: Preserving Promises to North Carolina Veterans Senator Richard Burr to Keynote Defend & Reform Event
RALEIGH, NC – On Wednesday, April 23, 2014, Concerned Veterans for America (CVA) will partner with The Weekly Standard to host “Reforming Veterans Affairs: Preserving Promises to North Carolina’s Veterans,” moderated by Weekly Standard senior writer Stephen Hayes. This event will outline the ways veterans—and all Americans—can contribute to ‘defending freedom’ by advancing reform.

In North Carolina, at the Winston-Salem Regional Benefit Office, an estimated 30,537 veterans are awaiting for their Veterans Affairs disability compensation claims, with 63.6 percent backlogged for more than 125 days. It also takes an average of 339.6 days to complete the claim. Nationally, this number is even more staggering with 619,290 veterans waiting and 55.5 percent backlogged 125 days. Veterans’ waiting in line for claims—sometimes for years—is utterly unacceptable. Panelists include Senator Richard Burr, the ranking member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, Pete Hegseth, CEO of Concerned Veterans for America, Ilario Pantano, Director of North Carolina Division of Veterans Affairs, and Darin Selnick, Military Advisor to Concerned Veterans for America and former assistant to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Stephen Hayes, senior writer at The Weekly Standard, will moderate the panel discussion. This event, sponsored by CVA’s North Carolina chapter and The Weekly Standard, is part of a state policy series entitled “Defend & Reform: Defending Freedom by Advancing Reform.”
