Reforming Veterans Affairs: Preserving Promises to Those Who Serve Moderated by Bill Kristol, Featuring former VA Sec. Principi, Senator Burr and Representative Jeff Miller

Arlington, VA – Roughly 900,000 veterans are awaiting their Veterans Affairs (VA) disability compensation claims, with 70 percent backlogged for more than 125 days. Veterans’ waiting in line for claims—sometimes for years—is utterly unacceptable; yet the VA says they can’t resolve the backlog until 2015. What can be done to transform the bureaucratic VA culture into a service-oriented agency that gets results? On June 20, Concerned Veterans for America will sponsor a Weekly Standard-hosted event to answer this urgent question. The event will kick off a five-part Defend & Reform Breakfast Series that will highlight ways veterans—and all Americans—can contribute to ‘defending freedom by advancing reform.’ Former VA Secretary Anthony Principi, Sen. Richard Burr (NC) and Rep. Jeff Miller (FL-1) —ranking member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee—will keynote the June 20th event, which is entitled “Reforming Veterans Affairs: Preserving Promises to Those Who Serve.” Bill Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard, will also lead a panel discussion featuring VA staff, Congressional leaders, and veterans’ policy experts. Panelists include Darin Selnick of Concerned Veterans for America, Peter Gaytan of the American Legion, Tom Tarantino of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, Mark Flatten of The Washington Examiner, and Stewart Hickey of AMVETS.  Registration is free and breakfast will be served. For media credentials please email Mary Vought at mvought@concernedveteransforamerica.org.  If you are unable to attend, CVA will be streaming the event LIVE online at ConcernedVeteransForAmerica.org. DATE:                       Thursday, June 20, 2013 TIME:                        8:00 – 10:30 a.m. ET LOCATION:             Charlie Palmer’s Steak | 101 Constitution Avenue, NW | Washington D.C. 20001
